What inspired you to start your business?
I have always worked in dance, fitness, and education fields. I love working with children as well as adults and providing a solution or service to my community is of great importance to me. I am very creative and love party planning also. Seeing the lack of places for littles to play and parents to interact post Covid is something that inspired this journey. My first clients who kept coming back and enjoying themselves when I initially rented hourly space encouraged the idea which eventually became Move n Play. My family was excited and my older brother, an entrepreneur, helped me feel confident as I took the initial steps towards business ownership.
What does a typical day look like for you as a mom and business owner?
After one-two cups of coffee (sometimes an espresso too) my kids are on the bus to elementary and middle school. I sometimes do a quick workout and/or take the pup for a walk before arriving at work and prepping the ‘Magic’ at MNP for a great indoor play day! Mondays are parachute play, Wednesdays are story time and everyday is packed with bubbles & FUN. I am a one-women show at work and enjoy creating all my marketing for social media, replying to emails, and brainstorming new ideas, events, and collaborations for MNP. I make it a point to always interact with my visitors and feel as if many clients have become friends. A large part of my day is tidying up and cleaning (which I don’t feel like doing once I get home lol). My husband and I are now in the stage of ‘taxi-cab drivers’ and after work/after school is very busy running our daughter to track or competitive dance and our son to one of his many sports practices.
What’s been the most rewarding part of running your business?
Getting to meet new kids and their families and watch them grow from crawlers to confident ‘big kids’ is very rewarding. I enjoy being a staple part of many young families’ lives within the community as they enjoy my engaging, active, safe space with their littles. Seeing the faces of young and old light up as they enjoy playtime together making memories, watching bubbles fall from our ceiling, swing, climb, make friends, figure out how to share, and play with their fav toys reminds me of the importance and uniqueness of my small business. Playtime is definitely learning and to see that daily first-hand is pretty great!

What challenges have you faced balancing motherhood and entrepreneurship?
I do think my kids being a bit older and in full-time school when I opened my business roughly two years ago was helpful. Balancing the constant need to always be working on something within the biz as a sole owner and operator can be challenging as Motherhood is also full time. I still need the reminder to myself to ‘clock out’ at times. Working some long weekend hours for parties/events isn’t always ideal with family but we are making it work.
What advice would you give to other moms thinking about starting a business?
Talk to other small-biz Mommas, get advice about the good, the bad and listen to their stories and any tips they are willing to share. Love what you do everyday and have a strong support system (spouse/family/friends) to encourage, brainstorm, and help you along the way. Really look at creating a unique solution/service that you can excel at when deciding to start your own business. It definitely takes a lot of energy and hustle -so be ready! Try out your idea and ease in to it part time if possible (I did this for a year prior to opening my current location). Believe in yourself, give yourself some time off and be open to pivoting with ideas as needed. Stay positive, inspired and passionate with professional development. Always be real, kind, and honest with your customers and keep your family a priority.
How do you and your family like to spend time together when you're not working?
My family is very active. We love traveling, fitness, and adventure. We are always busy with races, dance competitions, youth sporting events, etc. We just bought a camper and are excited to start our camping adventures as a family this summer with lots of hiking, rafting and outdoor activities. We also love music, movies, the beach, icecream and hanging with Dolli, our rescue pup.
